REVA Newsletter
- 15 February 2024 -
Grim weather, but with a generous helping of wellbeing news, this newsletter brings mountains of happiness (especially if you see it through rose-coloured glasses). No political facts, but waltz through research, outreach and other news. Read vigorously and don't let the info disappear, and you'll be a five-star colleague!

Since Monday, the new Ghent University Intranet has been launched. The full integration into SharePoint makes it easier to find and share information. When you open Teams (desktop or web version), you will see access to the Intranet shining in the left navigation.

It takes a little getting used to the revamped navigation and structure. This info page will get you started. Any further questions: feel free to contact Team HR.

No longer a mirage, but reality: from 1 April, the core facility Human Movement will be operational.
Prices, procedures and other necessary guidelines: two kick-off sessions will be organised. One here on campus (Monday 26 February), one at the HILO (Friday 1 March). To follow: live, livestreaming or watch recording afterwards.

More info on the info sessions - register

Thanks to Science Figured Out, you will learn how to get others excited about your research. A video training and a workshop on presentation techniques later and you will be able to explain the core of your doctoral research in a clear, incisive and convincing pitch.
The call has already been circulated through Doctoral Schools and all places are now full. But spots always open up, so it may be worth putting yourself on the waiting list.

On Friday 29 March, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., University Fund colleagues will provide an online explanation of opportunities for financial research support through donations, fundraising, chairs and legacies.
If you are a researcher interested in exploring the possibilities through the University Fund or want to gain more insight into specific aspects or additional funding opportunities, this session might be for you.

It's award season and colleagues Clara Leyns and Simon Helleputte get to put a statuette on the shelf. They are both laureates of the Faculty PhD Thesis Prize, congratulations!
  • Clara Leyns - laureate category Health Sciences with her PhD "The effectiveness of speech therapy for transgender women"
  • Simon Helleputte - laureate category Translational/Clinical Sciences with his PhD "Glycaemic control, cardiovascular health and physical activity in people with type 1 diabetes - A challenging triangle to target"
They will receive their prize and give a short presentation of their doctoral research during the Faculty Research Day on Thursday 21 March.

This year we are installing API's in our department, or Contact Persons for Integrity.

These persons are not confidants, do not have this power or responsibility, but are merely an accessible point of contact and a first listening ear who can possibly refer to other (official) bodies. The set-up in the department is also always in line with faculty and central initiatives.

In need of a chat, just an airing? You can always contact the colleagues below, no obligation to contact the API of your own division.
  • AAP/OAP: Nele De Bruyn, Kayleigh De Meulemeester, Bieke Samijn, Valentien Spanhove, Jan Stautemas, Fabienne Van De Steene
  • ATP: Kathleen De Looze, Joke Schuermans, Margot Vanneste
  • ZAP: Barbara Cagnie
The managing board warmly thanks the colleagues who are committed to this.
REV-Après Ski was a hotbed of happiness and good wishes: many thanks for making it a great NY event together!

The evening lives on in our minds and some photos. You can't expect top-quality photos from an underexposed chalet, but oh well.... you get the picture.

The third Friday in January, that seems to be becoming a good tradition for REVA New Year. So mark 17 January 2025.
Speaking of traditions: We have not let Compliments Day on 1 March pass silently for several years now. This year, we are keeping it a full week, from Friday 1 to Friday 8 March, and doing a mash-up with the Secret Hero action.

"The Secret Hero action?"
"Yes, right. That fine activity we organised during Happiness Week in September 2023."
"Ah yes right. For which you sign up and then you are assigned three colleagues. You then become their secret hero."
"Correct! And on the other hand, three colleagues then become your secret hero."
"And the idea is that during the week, your heroes surprise you, for example with a small gift, a nice message, or something sweet? And as secret hero, you then do the same for your three assigned colleagues?"
"That's how it is."
"Basically a bit like how Eveline surprised Sean, Peter and Stan at the time?"
"No. Wrong. Bad comparison. Don't approach it this way. Definitely not."
"Okay. And it remains anonymous, doesn't it?"
"Indeed, or at least while the action is running. Afterwards, it will be announced who had which secret heroes."
"Totally clear like that!"
"..."
"Doesn't it strike you too hard that the sole purpose of this fictional conversation is to once again fully explain the Secret Hero concept, especially to colleagues who were not there at the time or to colleagues who missed it at the time, in order to avoid it being just a boring little text with explanations and also a very bland way of rehashing the media scandal of 2020 of which only a handful of colleagues - let's say about 18 - will understand the actual reference?"
"Nah, it's subtle."
Happiness-wise already looking a bit further ahead?
Make a note of Tuesday 16 April. The Happiness Heroes will then play Easter Bunny.
